The Gospel on a Random Friday

Today is just another random Friday. I am at my wife’s parent’s house. I love being here. I love being able to visit with my family. I love my brother-in-law. I love how much He loves Jesus. I always enjoy my time here.

My wife and her mom left earlier to go shopping in Jackson.  I am going to a USM baseball game with my father-in-law and my brother-in-law later on this evening. However, since 10am this morning it has just been me and it has just been a random Friday. Everyone else is working (or shopping) and I have been busy doing ordinary tasks. I have washed the car, studied a little bit of Greek, and worked out. It has been altogether uneventful (in a relaxing way).  At the same time the gospel has made it glorious.  The fact that we can know the God of the universe and be known by Him changes everything!

I certainly don’t want to sound hyperspirtual. It is just that I was thinking earlier how amazing it is to be loved by God. I was not out doing anything inherently spiritual today. I wasn’t doing mission work. I wasn’t in deep reflection. I was simply doing random things on a random Friday. However, in light of the gospel even the mundane moments of life are exceptional. Jesus Christ’s gospel makes the way for ordinary people like me to have communion with the extraordinary God of the universe! I do not have to be in a temple or a sanctuary to be with God. I have complete access to God wherever I am. I have a Savior who is constantly going to the Father on my behalf. The Holy Spirit of God who leads and comforts me also inhabits me! That is so amazing. The gospel brings God so close to us! He is not far off, but He is with us! In Psalm 139 the psalmist beautifully shows us this truth!  I encourage you read it!

So many times in life we separate the sacred and the secular. We divorce the two in such a way that we think of them as exclusive. However, the gospel changes everything about life. It doesn’t just change Sunday mornings; it changes every minute of everyday. Without the gospel today would be for nothing. Everyday would be worthless. However, the gospel makes everyday worth living. The gospel perpetually places ordinary men into the extraordinary presence of the living God. The gospel marries the sacred and the secular. The ordinary moments of life are now spiritual to the core. We were dead men walking, but now we are live in Christ! We used to easy our conscience by “being spiritual” every once in a while. The gospel has freed us from condemnation! In Christ we are accepted and loved by God. This means that we do not operate under compulsion anymore, but under delight. We can delight in the spiritual activities of life and we can delight in the ordinary experiences of life. There is no distinction for us. Our God is ever present with us and so even mundane task are spiritual.  It is a beautiful thing. It is astounding to think that God is with us even when we wash our cars or study our lessons. Jesus truly is Emanuel- God with us.  Let’s soak up the beauty of a life lived with God. Let’s make much of Jesus even in the randomness of life. Let’s joy in the gospel that has changed everything about our lives. Let’s remember that every moment we live is truly amazing because we know the God of the universe. Not only that, we are known by Him! So whether you are sitting at a cubicle or relaxing at home, just remember because of Jesus, God is with you! That is astounding… even on a random Friday!
